A one page double sided letter in the hand of Tupac Shakur to school friend Cosima Knez. It is dated 13th November 1988. In the summer of 1988, 17-year-old Tupac Shakur and family moved from Baltimore to Marin City, California. There, Tupac attended Tamalpais High School in nearby Mill Valley, where he poured his creative energies into the award-winning, student-run’Ensemble Theatre Company’ and perhaps most importantly,’The Microphone Sessions’, a poetry workshop run by Leila Steinberg. Steinberg quickly recognized the future superstar’s talent, and took him under her wing, mentoring him in his writing and even welcoming him into her family’s home for a time. This relationship would prove to be pivotal for Tupac’s career. Not only did Steinberg help Tupac hone his writing skills, she would become his first manager, organizing a concert for his rap group’Strictly Dope’, with whom Tupac recorded under the stage name MC New York. Steinberg helped broker Tupac’s signing with Atron Gregory, manager of’Digital Underground’, and in 1990, Tupac joined the group as a roadie and back-up dance before going on to debut with them in 1991 under the stage name 2Pac. Cosima, the recipient of the present letter, was a Sophomore and fellow member of the Ensemble Theatre Company. The pair shared a deep connection at this time, just before and in the beginning stages of Tupac’s rise to fame, from their first meeting on Cosima’s birthday in October 1988, and lasting for approximately 7-8 months. The letter is in black ballpoint pen on a sheet of notebook paper reads as follows:’Cosima, 4 the first time since I’ve known u I can’t find the words to convey what I feel 4 u at this point. I still, and always will, care 4 u a great deal and imagine that that’s the reason our relationship resembles a roller-coaster. It is said that u learn from your mistakes and I think I have learned from mine. However, I have also discovered that u and I have yet 2 find that purpose in our relationship. At least, I haven’t. And if u have, please tell me. I don’t know what I want from u or what u want from me. One things 4 certain it is not your average relationship. Since there is no definition 4 our relationship it is up 2 us 2 define it. By defining our relationship or by attempting 2 define it we will save ourselves a lot of heartache and confusion (heartache for me and confusion for u) I’m not going to lie 2 u, I will 4 ever be curious about what it would be like 2 be with u sexually but is that possible? Can we handle a physical and emotional relationship? I’m positive neither one of us could handle making a commitment and I’m not sure if that’s the solution 2 our problem. So we’re still faced with the same question. Can we handle a physical and emotional relationship and still carry on as friends or should we not explore the physical side of our relationship and, leave our relationship like it is? Were u right then u said it was 2 late 4 us? Is it 2 late 4 us? These R the questions only u can answer. They must be answered with honesty regardless of how much u think it may hurt me. I need 2 know. If we choose 2 not explore the physical aspect of our relationship then neither one of us should be jealous when the other finds a person 2 whom they can kiss or make love 2. If we do choose 2 carefully explore the psychical aspect of our relationship then it need to be done with TRUE secrecy from everyone including SAM, SHAWN and CONNIE. We also need 2 be honest with each other about how your feeling. Only then will it work, if we choose 2 go that way. I hope u understand what I’m saying and I hope u can clarify some of these questions. We have both changed a little since be 4. At least I have and I think it’s 4 the better. So let me know what u think. Remember be honest, even if u think it will hurt me. You’ll be surprised how much my ego can take I can handle rejection if it’s honest. So let me know where we stand. THINKING OF U, Eternally your friend Tupac P. I had another dream about u!! Remind me 2 tell u about it’. The letter measures 21.5cm x 27.75cm (8.5 inches x 10.9 inches).
