Typed letter from Admiral Richard E. Byrd to Robert Brodie, SIGNED and dated February 1, 1938, with handwritten postscript. Robert Brodie was our uncle. In 1937, when he was around 13 years old, Bob wrote to Admiral Byrd with questions about the South Pole — perhaps as part of a school assignment. In early 1938, Admiral Byrd responded with a typed letter answering Bob’s questions with the same care and respect that he accorded to his adult correspondents. The result was this remarkable letter, which our family saved. After explaining why he could not answer sooner, Byrd wrote. The thing that interests me the most at the bottom of the world is the fact that there is going on at the South Pole an ice age such as existed at the top of the world 20,000 years ago. As you know, there is no such ice age at the North Pole. That is why it averages about fifty degrees colder at the South Pole and why the land is covered with a great ice cap hundreds of feet thick which has killed all life with the exception of the Emperor Penguin, and the Emperor lives only on the edge of the Continent. He closed by sending my kindest regards to your Class. ” And then, after signing, Admiral Byrd apparently felt he had forgotten to add a fact, which he wrote in a handwritten postscript: “There are summer visitors of course to Antarctica. As shown in the photos, the letter is well-preserved, although one can still see the creases where it was originally folded into an envelope. Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (1888 – 1957) was an American naval officer and explorer. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given by the United States, and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. Aircraft flights in which he served as a navigator and expedition leader crossed the Atlantic Ocean, a segment of the Arctic Ocean, and a segment of the Antarctic Plateau. Byrd claimed that his expeditions had been the first to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole by air, although his claim to have reached the North Pole is disputed. He is also known for discovering Mount Sidley, the largest dormant volcano in Antarctica. Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years. For now and into the foreseeable future, we will be listing rare paper items from his estate. Take a look at all our items for sale. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Autographs\Military”. Naturally I became very interested because there is virtually no Silverstein manuscript material or art work on the market. First Lady to 41st President George H. Archive of ten (10) typed letters signed and one (1) autograph letters signed, mostly ” Barbara” , all on personal stationery, to longtime supporter Jennings Osborne or his family members. Most letters are offering thanks for gifts or wishing holiday greetings. A few have other correspondence on opposite side, mostly from George Bush staff members. Osborne unfortunately affixed all his correspondence to album pages using double-sided tabs – in the corners and at the center sides. They probably could be removed with some care but we are offering them cheaper with them still affixed as such. Jennings Osborne was a wealthy Arkansas philanthropist. Of course, I have trouble relating to your yen for an out-of-this-world buggy ride but will hope (for your sake) that it comes sooner, rather than later. Now as to the rank of my Navy surgeon – I’m only glad that you didn’t suggest he be a Petty Officer. Nancy sends her best and give our regards to Margot. Hunter S. Thompson Typed Letter, With Handwritten Note

Hunter_S_Thompson_Typed_Letter_With_Handwritten_Note_01_jl Hunter S. Thompson Typed Letter, With Handwritten Note

Hunter S. Thompson Typed Letter, With Handwritten Note
Thompson typed letter signed “HST” in type, with a circle around his initials and also a handwritten note, “See’Viva Zapata’ sometime”, referring to the movie starring Marlon Brando. Aerogram letter, which appeared in “Proud Highway”, is dated 3 January (1964) from Woody Creek, Colorado to Thompson’s friend Paul Semonin, with interesting content on revolutionary politics. He writes in part, Dear Young Pioneer — Sorry to be throwing my wisdom at you in bits and pieces — instead of the long bomber I planned on — but I think we are dealing with too big a thing to try to whip it up into a neat packageYou accuse me repeatedly of being’anti-Marxist. Thus, we found ourselves arguing quite often when there was really nothing to argue about. It was a tug of war, not a discussion. My position is an always has been that I distrust power and authority, together with all those who come to it by conventional means — whether it be guns, votes or outright bribery. There are two main evils in the world today: One is Poverty, and the other is Governments. And frankly I see no hope of getting rid of either. So it will have to be a matter of degrees, and that’s where we quarrelAll of my reading about Africa, plus all my experience in SA [South America], convinces me that the’civilized’ nations of this earth have created in the’under-developed’ lands nothing more or less than a cheap and ragged imitation of their own Big System that has gone by the name of’government’ since man invented the word. Now and then I get the scent of a man with enough balls to try and whip things around to a decent position. Kennedy was one; Betancourt is another; Castro was and may still be; I even go along now and then with Kruschev [sic]but that doesn’t really alter my basic feelings about power and government. It’s pretty old to say that’power corrupts,’ but I think it does and I don’t think it corrupted Kennedy any more than it has Castro. Or Mao — and certainly your man [Kwame Nkrumah] therehe looks to me like another Batista. You hit a hot nerve when you said you may have more faith in the US than I do. I think you might, and on top of that I’ll give you another irony — I think I may be much closer to being a real ding-dong’revolutionary’ than you are. I know you’ll balk at that, but I reason it this way: No’revolutionary’ has any hope as long as he’s willing to deal with the Established Order on its own terms and in its own context. The only Revolution I would bet on would be one that set out to kill the roots and break all the dies of the System that came beforeLet me give you an example. As I see it, the best hope for South America is to export every gringo on the continent and sever all ties. Who would pay the bills? Surely not the Latins, because they don’t have a dime that hasn’t been salted away in Swiss banksThey threaten, they bluff, and they finally take the payoff, in cash or some other form. Maybe the Africans are different, I can’t say. Castro has thrown off one bogeyman [sic], only to be confronted with two more. I read Sartre’s thing [the introduction to “The Damned”] and agree with itmaybe it’s just that I won’t play the Big Game until it stops looking phoney. The best I can do is keep my tools sharp and wait for the honest opening — and decide, in the meantime, if it makes sense to kill the only roots we haveTell me if you see a middleground — and, if so, where, and how.
