Used to smooth fluctuations in a time series. Edward Prescott and Finn Kydland. Nobel prize for economics. Was based on two papers Prescott and Kydland wrote. In the first paper, written in 1977 “Rules Rather than Discretion: The inconsistency of optimal planning” Prescott and Kydland argue that purpose and goals of economic planning and policy is to trigger a desired response from the economy. However, Prescott and Kydland realized that these sectors are made up of individuals, individuals who make assumptions and predictions about the future. As Prescott and Kydland stated Even if there is a fixed and agreed upon. Know the timing and magnitude of the effects of their actions… Correct evaluation of the end-of-point position does not result in the social objective being maximized. Prescott and Kyland were pointing out that agents in the economy already factor into their decision making the assumed response by policy makers to a given economic climate. Additionally Prescott and Kydland felt that the policy makers due to their relationship with government suffered from a credibility issue. The reason for this dynamic is that the political process is designed to fix problems and benefit its citizens today. Prescott and Kydland demonstrated this with a simple yet convincing example. However, rational agents are forward planning creatures and know that if they and others build houses in the flood plain the government which makes decisions based on current situations will then provide flood protection in the future. While Prescott never uses these words he is describing a moral hazard. The second paper, written in 1982, “Time to Build and Aggregate Fluctuations” Prescott and Kydland argued that shifts in supply typically caused by changes and improvements in technology accounted Not only long term increases in living standards but also to many of the short term fluctuations in business cycles. To study this hypothesis Prescott established a model to study the change in output, investment, consumption, labor productivity, and employment, between the end of the Second World War and 1980. Using this model the two economists were able to correlate 70% of the fluctuation in output to changes and growth in technology. Their main contribution, however, was the way of modeling macroeconomic variables with microfoundations. View more great items. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Autographs\Historical”. (6 August 1821 – 1 February 1891) was an English. And scholar born in London. He was born on 6 August 1821, being the son of Edward Hallows Plumptre, a London solicitor. He was educated at home, and after a brief stay at. King’s College, London. Entered Oxford as a scholar of. Of which his uncle. In 1844, he took a double. Alone in mathematics, and in classics with Sir. He was elected to a fellowship at. Which he resigned three years afterwards, on his marriage with Harriet Theodosia, sister of. For some years the influence of his brother-in-law was apparent in his religious views, but as he advanced in life he identified himself with no party. He was ordained in 1847, by. In 1847, and joined the staff of. King’s College London. There his work mainly lay for twenty-one years, and he enlarged the scope of the institution by introducing evening classes. From 1847 to 1868, he was chaplain there, from 1853 to 1863 professor of pastoral theology, and from 1864 to 1881 professor of exegesis. He proved a most sympathetic teacher, and took a genuine interest in the future welfare of his pupils. He also took a leading part in promoting the higher education of women as a professor of. Harley Street, where he held the office of principal during the last two years of his work there (1875-77). Throughout this period he was also occupied in clerical work. From 1851 to 1858, he was assistant preacher at. He was rector of Pluckley from 1869 and of Bickley from 1873. In 1866, and the lectures were afterwards published under the title of’Christ and Christendom. From 1869 to 1874, he was a member of the Old Testament revision committee, and from 1872 to 1874 Grinfield lecturer and examiner at Oxford. In 1881, he resigned his work in London on becoming. He was an ideal dean, possessing a genuine talent for business, and being always ready to consider the suggestions of others. Not only the cathedral and the Theological College, but the city of Wells, its hospital, its almshouse, and its workhouse, commanded his service. Plumptre died on 1 February 1891 at the deanery of Wells, and was buried in the cathedral cemetery beside his wife, who had predeceased him on 3 April 1889. The marriage was childless. Meanwhile, his pen was never idle. He wrote much on the interpretation of scripture, endeavouring to combine and popularise, in no superficial fashion, the results attained by labourers in special sections of the subject. He contributed to the commentaries known respectively as the. The Speaker’s Commentary, that edited by. And the Bible Educator (serial from 1873-75). He also wrote Biblical Studies, 1870 3rd edit. Paul in Asia (1877), a Popular Exposition of the Epistles to the Seven Churches (1877 and 1879), Movements in Religious Thought: Romanism, Protestantism, Agnosticism (1879), and Theology and Life (1884). His most remarkable theological work was The Spirits in Prison, and other studies on Life after Death (1884 and 1885). The book comprises a review of previous teaching on the subject of. His characteristic sympathy with’the larger hope’ is moderated throughout by a characteristic caution. He had passed beyond the influence of Maurice, and, though his loyal admiration for his earlier teacher remained unchanged, he had rejected his conclusions. In 1888, he issued a little work on Wells Cathedral and its Deans, and in the same year appeared his Life of Bishop Ken. Though diffuse, the book has something of the charm of Walton’s Lives, and breathes the still air of a cathedral. Its main defect is the occasional intrusion of conjectural or’ideal’ biography. Plumptre published several volumes of verse. He had a keen perception of literary excellence, unappeasable ambition, and unwearied industry; but his gifts were hardly sufficient to insure him a place among the poets. Lazarus and other poems appeared in 1864, 8vo 3rd edit. 1868; Master and scholar, which was warmly praised in the Westminster Review, in 1866, 8vo; and Things New and Old in 1884, 8vo. All his pieces are refined and earnest; few are really forcible. Several of Plumptre’s hymns have been admitted into popular collections, and satisfy their not very exacting requirements. He also translated with much success the plays of. (1868), and thus gave readers ignorant of Greek some adequate conception of the masterpieces of Attic drama. For twenty years he studied. And his English version of Dante’s work appeared as The Divina Commedia and Canzoniere of Dante Alighieri; with Biographical Introduction, Notes and Essays vol. Plumptre’s notes condense all that history or tradition can tell us of the author. But the translation itself is hampered by a too strict adherence, in our stubborn tongue, to the metrical form of the original. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Autographs\Historical”. Archbishop of Canterbury Edward White Benson Hand Written Letter Mueller COA
“Archbishop of Canterbury” Edward White Benson Hand Written 3 Page Letter. This item is certified authentic by Todd Mueller Autographs and comes with their Certificate of Authenticity. Edward White Benson (14 July 1829 – 11 October 1896) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1883 until his death. Prior to this, he was the first Bishop of Truro, serving from 1877 to 1883, and began construction of Truro Cathedral. He was previously a schoolmaster and was the first Master of Wellington College from 1859 to 1872. He was baptised in St Martin in the Bull Ring, Birmingham, on 31 March 1830. The family moved to Wychbold when his father became manager of the British Alkali Works at Stoke Prior, Worcestershire. From 1840, he was educated at King Edward’s School, Birmingham and then Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated BA (8th in the Classical tripos) in 1852. At King Edward’s, under James Prince Lee, Benson “manifested a deeply religious tone of mind and was fond of sermons” The Cambridge Association for Spiritual Inquiry, known informally as the Cambridge Ghost Society or the Ghostlie Guild, was founded by Benson and Brooke Foss Westcott in 1851 at Trinity College. Westcott worked as its secretary until 1860. The society collected and investigated reports of ghosts. Other notable members included Alfred Barry and Henry Sidgwick. It has been described as a predecessor of the Society for Psychical Research. According to the Notebooks of Henry James, his source for the novella The Turn of the Screw was the Archbishop of Canterbury i. Benson at Addington Palace on 10 January 1895. Benson began his career as a schoolmaster at Rugby School in 1852, and was ordained deacon in 1853 and priest in 1857. In 1859 Benson was chosen by Prince Albert as the first Master of Wellington College, Berkshire, which had recently been built as the nation’s memorial to the Duke of Wellington. Benson was largely responsible for establishing Wellington as a leading public school, closely modelled upon Rugby School. From 1872 to 1877, he was Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral. In 1874, he set up Lincoln Theological College. He was appointed the first Bishop of Truro, where he served from 1877 to 1882. He was consecrated bishop by Archibald Campbell Tait, Archbishop of Canterbury, on St Mark’s day, 25 April 1877 at St Paul’s Cathedral. The Diocese of Truro was established in December 1876. Construction of Truro Cathedral began in 1880 to a design by the Gothic Revival architect John Loughborough Pearson. From 24 October 1880 until 1887 a temporary wooden building on an adjacent site served as the cathedral. As archbishop, Benson consecrated the cathedral on 3 November 1887. He founded Truro High School for Girls in 1880. In 1883 he was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. Five years later Benson avoided the prosecution before a lay tribunal of Edward King, Bishop of Lincoln, under the Public Worship Regulation Act 1874 for six ritual offences by hearing the case in his own archiepiscopal court (inactive since 1699). In his judgement (often called “the Lincoln Judgement”), he found against the bishop on two points, with a proviso as to a third that when performing the manual acts during the prayer of consecration in the Holy Communion service, the priest must stand in a way that is visible to the people. Benson tried to amalgamate the two Convocations and the new houses of laity into a single assembly. In 1896 it was established that they could’unofficially’ meet together. In September of the same year, the papal bull Apostolicae curae, which denied the validity of Anglican orders, was published and Benson had started a reply. He preached his last sermon at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh on 27 September: there is a memorial to him in the north aisle there. He was taken ill while attending Sunday service in St Deiniol’s Church, Hawarden, Wales, on 11 October 1896, during a visit to the former Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone. His death was attributed to heart failure. He was buried at Canterbury Cathedral, in a magnificent tomb located at the western end of the nave. The tomb is emblazoned with the epitaph Benson had chosen: Miserere mei Deus Per crucem et passionem tuam libera me Christe (“Have mercy on me O Christ our God, Through Thy Cross and Passion, deliver thou me”). His work concerning Saint Cyprian, Cyprian: his life, his times, his work was published posthumously, in the year after his death. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Autographs\Historical”.
