Charles Austin Doan, the retired dean of Ohio State University Medical School and a noted hematologist, died of arteriosclerosis on Feb. 13 at a nursing home in West Bloomfield, Mich. He was 93 years old and until last month had lived in Columbus, Ohio. Doan was associated with the Ohio State Medical School for 36 years. A 1923 medical graduate of Johns Hopkins University, he joined the Ohio State faculty in 1930, after serving as a research assistant and teacher at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. Doan was director of medical and surgical research at Ohio State from 1930 until 1936, when he was named chairman of the department of medicine. He was named dean of the medical school and director of the health center in 1944 and served until 1961, when he became professor emeritus. He then directed the division of hematology until 1966.
