In Very Good ++ condition, this item was well-stored and carefully preserved. It was folded twice horizonatlly for insertion in a mailing envelope. On top left corner, a slit from removal of staple and a bit of wrinkling around slit. Contains some great literary content between Miller and Pascal Covici, who was himself a literary legend in the publishing world (see below). First, Miller asks about Albert Cossery, whom he expects to meet soon on a trip to Paris. Cossery (3 November 1913 22 June 2008) was an Egyptian-born French writer who was nicknamed “The Voltaire of the Nile”. The he shares his enthusiasm for Saul Bellow and his book “Henderson the Rain King, ” and asks Covici to give him a hug Hug him for me! The carbon-copy is printed on very delicate yellow carbon paper, which is in Very Good condition. It has a slit and minor wrinkling in upper corner where a staple was removed. Covici asks about “The Henry Miller Reader, ” which was recently published, says he has enclosed a news item about Tropic of Cancer (yet to be published in America, where it was still banned), and adds that the moral climate of America is changing. Some great lietary tie-ins. According to wiki, Pascal Avram “Pat” Covici (18851964) was a Romanian Jewish-American book publisher and editor. Covici and his partner published Gene Fowler, Wyndham Lewis, Clifford Odets, Nathanael West, and John Steinbeck. They published Tortilla Flat in 1935 and other new and reprinted Steinbeck works. In 1938, Covici moved to Viking Press, where he convinced Steinbeck to sign. Viking published The Grapes of Wrath (1939), which received a 1940 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Covici also worked on the Viking Portable Library and with authors like Joseph Campbell, Ludwig Bemelmans, Gilbert Highet, Lionel Trilling, Arthur Miller, George Gamow, Shirley Jackson, Willy Ley, Marianne Moore, and Saul Bellow. Bellow’s novel Herzog, Steinbeck’s East of Eden, and Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle are dedicated to Covici.
