Today de Havilland is best remembered for having been the last surviving major star of the 1939 super film classic, Gone With The Wind, where she played the tender Melanie , opposite Vivien Leigh’s coquettish Scarlet O’Hara. She, and her younger sister became actresses, and in 1942, both Olivia and Joan were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Joan won first for her role in Alfred Hitchcock’s Suspicion (1941) over Olivia’s performance in Hold Back the Dawn. But Olivia eventually evened, then bettered the score: she won Best Actress Academy Awards for 1946’s To Each His Own , and for 1949’s The Heiress. She was often paired with rugged male sex symbol Errol Flynn, and they appeared together in Captain Blood, The Charge of the Light Brigade, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Four’s a Crowd, Dodge City, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, Santa Fe Trail , and They Died with Their Boots On. De Havilland lived in semi-reclusion in Paris, France for many years, and just passed away at the age of 104. Item Description — Please Read CAREFULLY! 1 this is a one-of-a-kind, handwritten letter by Olivia de Havilland dated 1981. It is on a pale blue 8 x 11 1/2″ sheet of “The Dorchester stationery. The Dorchester apparently is a London hotel. This was sent to a drama professor at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. The professor — James Cavanaugh — was writing a biography on actor Van Heflin, and had written earlier to de Havilland asking her about having worked with Van Heflin. She writes that she didn’t know Van Heflin well, and probably couldn’t add much to the professor’s book. De Havilland has signed her full name in blue fountain pen ink. Just some light wear to the letter, but no tears or damage. AND INCLUDED FOR FREE. 2 this is the original mailing envelope for the letter, and it is addressed in de Havilland’s handwriting. 3 this is a nice b/w glossy, b/w, wallet-sized unsigned photo of de Havilland.
