FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT Signed letter with handwritten note to Herbert Pulitzer
ROOSEVELT – Signed letter with handwritten note to Herbert Pulitzer. Herbert’Tony’ Pulitzer was the youngest son of the legendary Joseph Pulitzer, of the Pulitzer prize. A flying instructor in the US Navy in WWI. Briefly took over control of the’World’ newspaper in 1931 after his brother Ralph had a breakdown, but per report. He had neither the training, talent nor inclination for the job. He antagonized the staff by remaining aloof, smoking perfumed cigarettes, and speaking in an explosive English accent. He joined the RAF and served in WWII. By all reports he preferred a life hunting and shooting, and it seems, fishing. This 1935 letter is a spontaneous slice of history written in his own distinctive hand by FDR, in a typed and signed thank you letter to Herbert Pulitzer from the president. The fine salmon has been received. And I want to assure you of my sincere appre. Ciation of your thoughtfulness in sending it. We have just had. On original White House stationary, folded sheet, as-is, seen in photos, this was originally matted, but I have removed the mat, so there is a very faint darker border as seen in photos. This has been in my collection for some time and it is looking for a new home. This is a wonderful letter revealing just a glimpse of Presidential life beyond the usual typewritten examples. Feel free to contact me. The item “FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT Signed letter with handwritten note to Herbert Pulitzer” is in sale since Tuesday, April 16, 2019.
