Of the Interior under Hayes, Missouri Senator, Civil War General. ALS, February 9, 1891 on Hamburg-American Packet Company letterhead. Schurz suggests noted autograph collector and genealogist Charles Elmer Rice that he might ask former president Hayes for information on former Postmaster General Horace Maynard. Schurz admits to not having any information or knowledge of his former colleagues ancestry. The letter has nice association of the Hayes Administration and one of the more serious autograph collectors of the period. Schurz was Lincolns Ambassador to Spain in the opening months of the Civil War, returning to serve on the battlefield as a General. Following the war he became the first German-American elected to the US Senate, appointed to the Cabinet by Hayes, and later served as Editor of the New York Evening Post and Harpers Weekly. Your letter of Feby 6 is in my hands. You might possibly learn what you wish to know by addressing Ed. Hayes, Fremont Ohio or the Postmasters in Knoxville and in Washington. Chas Elmer Rice Esq.
