I beg leave to introduce the bearer, Mr. He is recommended to me in the strongest manner by a friend at Baltimore in North America, and what I have seen of him here, bespeaks him a person of character and good manners. Any civility you have goodness to offer him will be esteemed as a real favor conferred on him. Sir, your most obedient humble servant – St. Vincent Rosia House, Gibraltar, 6th. Rosia House in Gibraltar was St. Vincent’s home and headquarters at the time. If you’re not really familiar with Sir John Jervis and his illustrious naval career it’s worth a read, say, Wikipedia for example. He was a giant in British Naval History and at the time this was written, his third in command was Admiral Horatio Nelson, who actually went on to take Jervis’ position upon his retirement. This letter is in excellent condition with brown ink on ivory colored hand laid paper. The original envelope is included, also addressed in St. It’s not in as good condition as the letter – some of the folded seams have come apart. The face of the envelope reads: To… The Captain of any one of His Maj. The paper the letter is written on is: 9-1/2″ x 15″. It’s folded in two with the letter written on one of the two halves. The letter then is: 9-1/2″ x 7-1/2″. The envelope is approx. Note: The pic of St. Vincent isn’t included. I borrowed it from the internet.
