Pivotal iconic piece of theater memorabilia. Two sided one sheet handwritten letter by actress diana barrymore. Freshly bought by myself from susan kupcinet, daughter in law of the late Irv Kupcinet, the famous chicago entertainment news writer and talkshow host. Barrymore wrote the letter to her close friend Essie Kupcinet, wife of Irv Kupcinet. Although postmarked july 30 kennebunkport Maine, she used an envelope from Hotel Nacional in Havana. Its common knowledge that Diana Barrymore may have become infatuated with Tennessee Williams, but this letter is an artifact that documents it. She tells Essie that she and Tennesse danced and gambled and got stoned in Cuba. She laments about her three marriages at 38. She says what is true love? She claims he wants to be with her. She says she passed his test of tolerating his gay parties and cruising, and his weird hours. Yes she is talking about Tennessee Williams. He was known to be a homosexual or bi-sexual; “We danced like mad in Cuba” she says. Some mundane discussion includes her mention that she might have an August trip to the orient. “Dont tell kup yet” she says. But she tells Essie that Irv can have the news scoop about the cuba trip. Diana Barrymore died tragically five months after she wrote this letter. Her manager told Tennesee Williams that the death scene looked suspicious, although ruled a suicide. Ironically Essies daughter, Karyn Kupcinet, was an aspiring actress who died suspiciously three years after Diana. The item “1959 handwritten letter of Diana Barrymore, with postmarked.
