March 4, 1885 handwritten two-page letter written and signed by future King of the United Kingdom, George V, authenticated by both James Spence Authentication and RR Auctions. JSA certification #. Letter written while George V was serving in the Royal Navy, on letterhead from the Royal Navy College Greenwich, and references an upcoming trip to Cambridge. George V would go on to serve as King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 1910 until his death in 1936. The son of Edward VII, who reigned from 1901 until his death in 1910, and grandson of Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901, and was Queen at the time this letter was written. George V reigned over the First World War, the rise of fascism, communism, Irish Republicanism, Indian independence, the collapses of the empires of his cousins, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, and Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, the first Labor government in the United Kingdom, and the Statute of Westminster, recognizing the Dominions as separate independent entities within the Commonwealth. Changed the name of his House, House Saxon-Coburg and Gotha, to House Windsor, due to anti-German sentiment during World War I. Succeeded by his eldest son, Edward VIII, who would become the first King to abdicate the Crown. Excellent condition; aside from two light folding creases, no rips or tears and still reads very well despite its age. Size: 3.5″ x 6″.
