




Handwritten Letter from John Manning to his “dearest wife”, informing her that he “shall endeavor to be home on Saturday or Sunday” and that he, his children, and the rest of the household are well, dated Tuesday 10th May 1883. Letter measures 15-7/8″ x 12-1/2″. It is presently glued to matte board. The letter itself has some stains, foxing, tears and wrinkles. John Lawrence Manning was the 65th Governor of the State of South Carolina, from 1852 to 1854. Manning was a slaveowner and owned Millford Plantation near Pinewood, South Carolina.
