Dated December 28, 1850 and sent from Raleigh to Salem, North Carolina. Quarto, on a folded folio sheet. Minor loss from wax seal, affecting one word. Housed in a custom cloth folder with gilt title on leather spine label. Letter from Jesse Albert Waugh to his mother, asking her to please send down her slave, Henry, for hire to North Carolina Governor David Reid. Reid was governor from 1850 to 1854, and subsequently served in the U. Senate; he was a strong defender of slavery and the secessionist cause. Waugh, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, was in Raleigh serving in the state general assembly. Or rather Governor Reid yesterday, he says he wrote to you hw would give you your price for the hire of Henry. He is expecting him down some time next week. If you have not already made some arrangement to get him here, I would advise you to let Bill bring him down in a buggy or carryall and let Guy haul it…. He recounts how delporably dull Raleigh is at Christmas-time and closes by admonishing that his mother should try to hire out her slaves to best advantage. Webb to hire out his mother’s Negroes to the best advantage, and you must try and do the same with yours. ” He add a post script urging his mother to vaccinate “all ol & young” against small pox, and a second post script asking her to send his “fine black silk cravat.
