The item for sale is a hand written and signed RV Burgin letter, simply fascinating. The note is in response to a letter a former US Navy Intelligence Officer (myself) wrote, and is written at the bottom of that. The note is generally about the fighting conditions of the Pacific Island battles in which he took part. Also, just how horrible it was. His portion is Mr. I fought on New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa. They were different as daylight and dark, but the same. The weather and terrain. New Britain was jungle warfare, with lots of rain. Peleliu was a coral island 100 to 120 degrees, no place to dig a foxhole. Okinawa was almost flat with small ridges, valleys and more open terrain, and it rained a lot. I was in a field hospital when the big rain came late May or early June. ALL BAD, but Peleliu was worst for me. I have buddies; they thought Okinawa was the worst. We received more artillery on Okinawa, than the other islands. I had 4 men hit with artillery on Okinawa, including myself. I personally think, Peleliu the heat caused the dead bodies laying around in 120 degree weather, dont take long to go bad! Over 500, yes 500 man made caves on that 2mi x6mi island. Semper Fi, RV Burgin The letter is lightly creased in two locations. Also, there is a very minor mark on letter in top right corner. Overall, its in great condition. RV Burgin was was a US Marine who fought at New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa. He was one of the primary characters portrayed in The Pacific, which was the second Band Of Brothers. His book, Island of the Damned, is a classic with regard to the US island war in the Pacific; and in fact was one of the two books The Pacific was based on. Burgin was a mortar man in the legendary K-Company, 3. Marines; which were led by the famed Andy (Ack Ack) Haldane. K/3/5 is one of the most famous companies in US history. This is a great addition to any collection! I have been collecting autographs for years. Im a former US Navy Intelligence Officer, and veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Any questions please feel free to ask, and thanks for looking!
