DOCUMENT EXHIBITS AGE TONING, LIGHT STAINS AND WAS ONCE LIGHTLY FOLDED BUT NOW HARDLY NOTICEABLE, ELSE VERY GOOD (see photos). He oversaw the striking of the first coins of the United States and along with Alexander Hamilton and Albert Gallatin, is widely regarded as the one of the founders of the financial system of the United States. From 1781 to 1784, he served as Superintendent of Finance of the United States, a forerunner to U. Secretary of the Treasury. As the central civilian in the government, Morris was considered, next to George Washington, the most powerful man in America and was often referred to as “Financier of the Revolution”. He was also Agent of Marine, a position that gave him much influence over the Continental Navy. He spent several years in debtor’s prison until Congress passed a bankruptcy act to release him. Afterwards he led a quiet life in Philadelphia until his death in 1806. INCLUDED IS A VINTAGE 1862 STEEL ENGRAVING (8″ x 10 1/2″) OF MORRIS. THE ENGRAVING IS BY PHILLIBROWN AND PUBLISHED BY JOHNSON, FRY & Co. (SEE MY OTHER LISTINGS FOR OTHER DOI SIGNERS, HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS AND AUTOGRAPHS).
