Duke Connaught Handwritten letter 1916 Canada US Irish Rebellion WW1 Espionage
A very rare autographed letter written and signed by the then Governor General of Canada…. A very rare confidential handwritten letter from Arthur to the UK Ambassador to the U. SA, Cecil Spring-Rice, concerning a certain “O’Brien”. The Duke is offering to send a Major Duff of the to Gordon Highlanders as Military Attache to Washington to help deal with this gentleman. Not to forget that this was the first year of the Irish Rebellion and Britain was struggling to handle the World War, to get the US involved on the Allies’ side, and to combat espionage on many fronts. A unique item includes the envelope, which is also handwritten by the Duke bearing his seal on the envelope and which he has also initialled. The letter comes from a collection I acquired some years ago of Royal correspondence including letters from Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. The item “Duke Connaught Handwritten letter 1916 Canada US Irish Rebellion WW1 Espionage” is in sale since Sunday, November 3, 2019.
