MARK TWAIN’ CLEMENS – HAND WRITTEN LETTER. SIGNED May 4th, 1897. Actual Letter Size = 6 1/4″ x 3 7/8″ / Framed Size 20 5/8″ x 12 5/16″ x 1 /. Famed American literary icon, Mark Twain has handwritten and signed this letter dated May, 4, 1897, including his birth name S. Clemens in black fountain pen. The letter is accompanied with two period photo cards, produced in 1897 by Twain’s wife, Olivia Clemens, bearing images of Twain in a rocking chair, smoking a cigar, and short quotations from his travelogue, “Following the Equator”. Clemens adopted Twain as his pen name, from a term associated with the measurement of water depth on riverboats like those he spent so much time traveling, piloting and writing about along the Mississippi.
