Sir Robert Peel Former Prime Minister Excellent Hand Written One Page Letter

Sir Robert Peel Former Prime Minister Excellent Hand Written One Page Letter

Sir Robert Peel Former Prime Minister Excellent Hand Written One Page Letter
ONE PAGE LETTER FROM’ DRAYTON MANOR’ HAND WRITTEN IN THE THIRD PERSON BY FORMER PRIME MINISTER……… Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet , &###xA0; PC. &###xA0;(5 February 1788&###xA0;&###x2013; 2 July 1850)&##xA0. Was a British statesman and member of the&###xA0; Conservative Party. &###xA0;who served twice as&###xA0; Prime Minister. &###xA0;of the&###xA0; United Kingdom. &###xA0;(1834&###x2013;1835 and 1841&###x2013;1846) and twice as&###xA0; Home Secretary. &###xA0;(1822&###x2013;1827 and 1828&###x2013;1830). He is regarded as the father of modern&###xA0; British policing. &###xA0;and as one of the founders of the modern Conservative Party. Making Robert the first future Prime Minister from an industrial business background, he was educated at&###xA0; Bury Grammar School. &###xA0; Hipperholme Grammar School. &###xA0;and&###xA0; Harrow School. Subsequently earning a&###xA0; double first. &###xA0;in classics and mathematics from&###xA0; Christ Church, Oxford. He entered the&###xA0; House of Commons. &###xA0;in 1809 under the tutelage of his father and of&###xA0; Sir Arthur Wellesley. The future Duke of Wellington. Peel was widely seen as a “rising star” in the Conservative Party. &###xA0;and served in various junior ministerial offices, becoming (for example)&###xA0; Chief Secretary for Ireland. &###xA0;(1812&###x2013;1818) and Chairman of the&###xA0; Bullion Committee. Peel entered&###xA0; the Cabinet. &###xA0;for the first time as Home Secretary (1822&###x2013;1827), where he reformed and liberalised the criminal law and created the modern police force, leading to a new type of officer known in tribute to him as “bobbies” and “peelers”. He played a central role in making&###xA0; free trade. &###xA0;a reality (1840s) and set up a modern banking system. After the resignation of Prime Minister Robert Jenkinson, &###xA0; the Earl of Liverpool. Initially a supporter of&###xA0; legal discrimination against Catholics. Peel eventually supported the repeal of the&###xA0; Test Act. &###xA0;(1828) and the&###xA0; Roman Catholic Relief Act 1829. Claiming that “though emancipation was a great danger, civil strife was a greater danger”. &###xA0;for the first time. After successive election defeats, leadership of the Conservative Party gradually passed from Wellington to Peel, and when King&###xA0; William IV. &###xA0;asked Wellington to become Prime Minister in November 1834, he declined and Peel was selected instead, with Wellington serving as caretaker until Peel took office. Peel then issued the&###xA0; Tamworth Manifesto. &###xA0;(December 1834), laying down the principles upon which the modern British Conservative Party is based. &###xA0;was a minority government, dependent on Whig support and with Peel serving as his own&###xA0; Chancellor of the Exchequer. After only four months, his government collapsed and he served as&###xA0; Leader of the Opposition. &###xA0;during the&###xA0; second government. &###xA0;of&###xA0; the Viscount Melbourne. Peel declined to head another minority government in May 1839, prompting the&###xA0; Bedchamber crisis. He finally became Prime Minister again after the&###xA0; 1841 general election. &###xA0;ruled for five years &###x2013; its major legislation included the&###xA0; Mines and Collieries Act 1842. The&###xA0; Factories Act 1844. &###xA0;and the&###xA0; Railway Regulation Act 1844. Peel’s government was weakened by anti-Irish and anti-Catholic sentiment following the controversial&###xA0; Maynooth Grant. After the outbreak of the&###xA0; Great Irish Potato Famine. His decision to join with Whigs and&###xA0; Radicals. &###xA0;to repeal the&###xA0; Corn Laws. &###xA0;led to his resignation as Prime Minister in 1846. Peel remained an influential&###xA0; backbench. &###xA0;MP and leader of the&###xA0; Peelite. Faction until his death in 1850. Peel often started from a traditional Tory position in opposition to a measure, then reversed his stance and became the leader in supporting liberal legislation. &###xA0;Peel, a Conservative, achieved repeal with the support of the Whigs in Parliament, overcoming the opposition of most of his own party. Many critics accordingly saw him as a traitor to the Tory cause, or as “a Liberal wolf in sheep’s clothing”, because his final position reflected liberal ideas. &###xA0;says: Peel was in the first rank of 19th century statesmen. He carried Catholic Emancipation; he repealed the Corn Laws; he created the modern Conservative Party on the ruins of the&###xA0; old Toryism. A SIGN OF THE TIMES.
