1860 Letter to Abraham Lincoln from William III with a handwritten note by President-Elect Lincoln. Shortly after Abraham Lincolns election in 1860, he received this highly important letter from William III, King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg. The King is recommending to then President-Elect Lincoln that his son-in-law, Theodorus Marinus Roest van Limburg, continue as his ambassador to the United States of America. Lincoln made a handwritten note on the letters reverse regarding its contents, which reads as follows. From His Majesty The King of the Netherlands, 30. Roest van Limburg as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of the Netherlands. Roest van Limburg served as Envoy to the United States from 1856 to 1868, so the letter apparently served its purpose. The recommendation is made by the King in French, as that was the official language of the Dutch court in the 1800s. It has been professionally translated by Transcription Services Ltd. Based in the United Kingdom; that translation can be found below. Word documents of the English and French translations from Transcription Services Ltd. Please see pictures for condition the letter is fragile and separated at multiple folds but is kept intact by tape applied long ago and displays beautifully. There is no doubt, however, that this is a highly important letter from a foreign king to Abraham Lincoln regarding an important diplomatic position during the American Civil War. Very dear and great friend, the desire which drives me to continually reinforce our friendly relations and good intelligence that exists so happily between the Netherlands and the United States of America, and my intention to give to Sire Théodore Marinus Roest van Limburg, my resident minister in Washington, proof that I appreciate the manner in which he fullfils his diplomatic functions, oblige me to provide new letters of credibility regarding his quality as my special envoy and plenipotentiary minister close to Your Excellency. The knowledge I have of the personal qualities of Sir Roest van Limburg, and his great zeal in maintaining the good harmony between both our governments, convinces me that he shall continue to serve to our mutual satisfaction in the mission with which he has been entrusted. Very dear and great friend. A true friend, signed ; Guillaume. The 30th of December 1860. Of the United states of America.
