1859 JOHN HORTON SLAUGHTER Important HANDWRITTEN LETTER Civil War TEXAS Houston
Important, Rare, Handwritten Letter by JOHN HORTON SLAUGHTER aka TEXAS JOHN SLAUGHTER, SHERIFF SLAUGHTER, JOHN H. SLAUGHTER, written in 1859 when he was only 18 years old. Single Page Handwritten Letter, single sheet, light blue laid paper with a nickel size blind embossed emblem at the upper right corner, approximately 7.75 x 12 inches. GOOD condition, several folds where the letter was probably folded to fit into a small envelope (NO envelope is present), very small holes where a couple folds intersect, a few ink stains on the blank back side, otherwise solid with writing that is fully legible. Folded is how the letter was preserved and is its normal state. The letter was written to John H. LINDSEY, of Frankfort, Kentucky. The Lindsey / Lindsay family is an old and prominent Kentucky family, as are its relations. The contents of the letter seem to indicate a familial relationship of some sort between the Slaughter and Lindsey family lines. This pre Civil War letter written at the age of 18 is by far the earliest letter of JOHN HORTON SLAUGHTER that I have seen. It gives a glimpse of his life and ambitions that have rarely, if ever, been recorded. The letter reads in great part. You say you have not heard from me in a long time. I answered your other letter acknowledging the receipt of the other draft & your Aunt also wrote in it making a long letter. Have raised a small crop of cotton & I have some cattle & young horses to sell if I could meet with a purchaser. You say your state has gone for the Democrats. You had better quit it and come to Texas, it has gone the opposition ticket. Houston is elected by a large majority. Your relations are all well as usual except? Who has been quite sick but she is now on the mend… The rest of our family is as well as usual… We don’t know (what) you do to stand it in Ky. You must suffer very much. Remember me to all. / Yours Truly, John H. This letter was acquired in Northern California from the estate of a member of (per the estate listing): a very prominent Southern family, offering… Pre-and post-Civil War ephemera (letters and documents)… Most of the interesting old documents I found related to the LINDSEY FAMILY of FRANKFORT, KENTUCKY, including many documents and letters of JOHN B. LINDSEY (born July 4, 1837, Frankfort, KY, died 1922, Frankfort, KY), among which was this letter. I also acquired an unpublished autobiography by Edwin S. Lindsey, the Grandson of John B. There is a paragraph on page 3 where he writes: When he was a young man, Grandfather Lindsey had tuberculosis, the dreaded Great White Plague of that age. Those were the wild days of the West, and many were his adventures, which will have to be omitted now. This paragraph matches perfectly with the Slaughterhouse letter urging the young John Lindsey to leave Kentucky and join him in Texas. Another paragraph gives details of John B. Lindsey that relate to his political positions, ones that match perfectly with those of Texas and Slaughter in 1859: Grandfather Lindsey’s law partner was one of his brothers, Daniel Weisiger Lindsey. As in other border states, Kentucky families were often divided over the Civil War. Uncle Dan was a Federal Cavalry Colonel, then adjutant general of Kentucky, and of course always a staunch Republican. Lindsey was a Confederate and a Democrat. But they practiced law together happily and very successfully. ” And to add a bit more about John Lindsey from the grandson’s autobiography: “In 1860 Grandfather married Helen Talbot, who was descended on her mother’s side from James Garrard b. Here is where the Huguenot blood comes in. You can find out more about JOHN B. LINDSEY and the LINDSEY, TALBOT, GARRARD and Related Families by searching online, often with keywords Kentucky or Frankfort, Kentucky. I will be separately listing other items related to JOHN B. LINDSEY, HELEN (TALBOT) LINDSEY, and other LINDSEY FAMILY members. About JOHN HORTON SLAUGHTER (excerpted from Wikipedia). John Horton Slaughter, b. 1922, also known as Texas John Slaughter, was an American lawman, cowboy, poker player and rancher in the Southwestern United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After serving in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, Slaughter earned a reputation fighting hostile Indians and Mexican and American outlaws in the Arizona and New Mexico territories. In the latter half of his life, he lived at the San Bernardino Ranch, which is today a well-preserved National Historic Landmark in Cochise County in far southeastern Arizona. John Lawrence Sullivan (October 15, 1858 February 2, 1918), also known as the “Boston Strong Boy”, was an Irish-American boxer recognized as the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing, holding the title from February 7, 1882, to 1892. He is also generally recognized as the last heavyweight champion of bare-knuckle boxing under the London Prize Ring Rules. Extremely Rare handwritten letter, two pages, 6 x 9.5, The Portland letterhead, October 1, 1910. Letter to Thomas Forsyth of the Boston Belting Company, in part. Just a line to let you know that you are not forgotten. I will be in San Francisco the 16th of this month and will try and make it a point to see Mr. John Britton as I play there for one weekTom my friend Mr. Roosevelt has brought the name of insurgency to the front. He is without doubt the voice of the people. The people in this universe of ours are beginning to take notice not of a man’s politics but of his integrity, honesty and interest in the people’s welfare and that Mr. Roosevelt althrough the sweep the insurgents have made throughout the country shows what the people wantthey have sickened of Cannonism Aldrichism and Tawneyism and they will get their men Cannon or Aldrich when the time comes for their renomination. Tawney got his already. Well with the best in the world to you and your brother. ” On the reverse of the second pages Sullivan signs his name again and adds the dates of his forthcoming trip: “John L. Francis Hotel, San Francisco Cal, Oct 16th to 22nd, Regards to Ed Harkins, John Muldoon and John Good. ” Signed “John L Sullivan. In fine condition, with splitting to the mailing folds. Accompanied by the original dated mailing envelope, addressed in Sullivan’s own hand. Long retired from his days in prizefighting, this letter finds Sullivan touring the Northwest, performing vaudeville and giving lectures and boxing seminars to consistently packed theatres. Years earlier Sullivan developed a friendship with then New York Governor Theodore Roosevelt, himself an avid boxer who later lost vision in his left eye after a White House sparring session. Roosevelt held particular esteem for Sullivan, whom he considered as game and straight and honest a fighter as ever stepped in the ring, telling words given Roosevelts later denunciation of prized fights in the wake of the Johnson-Jeffries Fight on July 4, 1910. Sullivans regard for Roosevelt is likewise made readily apparent in his aggressive tone, touting the former president as the voice of the people, while deriding lesser Republicans like Nelson Aldrich, Joseph Cannon, and James Tawney. A rare letter from the legendary pugilist, and the first we’ve offered in over five years. The Kilrain fight is considered to be a turning point in boxing history because it was the last world title bout fought under the London Prize Ring Rules, and therefore the last bare-knuckle heavyweight title bout. It was one of the first sporting events in the United States to receive national press coverage.. It lasted an astonishing 75 rounds. Guaranteed Authentic for Life. Conway’s Vintage Treasures.
