An incredible TLS written by Harry Truman on 10/29/59 to his former Secretary of State Dean Acheson. The content of the typed portion is rather banal – it regards a copy of a letter Truman had written to publisher Chester Kerr. What makes this letter so fascinating is the postscript in Truman’s hand regarding the suicide of his assistant Gene Bailey and how Bess now had to fill in. The typed portion reads in full. It is signed “Harry”. The postscript reads in full in Truman’s hand. Wish I could make it. Gene Bailey who had been with me since’53 put himself to sleep with carbon monoxide and I’ve even had the Boss working believe it or not. My best to Alice. The “Boss” is, of course, his wife Bess. The words “I’ve” and “himself” are slightly smudged. See photos for how this looks. A frank and chilling letter from one of our most out-spoken Presidents.
