Henry W. Poor. Co-Founder of Standard & Poor's. Hand Written and Signed Letter
Handwritten, signed letter, on his office stationery 9 x 6. To Samuel Knott, Esq, of the Hartford, Providence & Fishkill Railroad Co, dated September 9, 1867. In 1867, Henry W. This letter provides an interesting and almost humorous insight into his persistence and energy, willing to follow an important sales lead by not-so-subtly namedropping and coercing Mr. Knott to confirm a meeting with the CEO Mr. Bartholomew of his company on a particular date and time (most convenient to Poor) in Hartford. Henry William Poor would later partner with his equally energetic father, Henry Varnum Poor, to form the earliest and greatest Wall Street investment publishing and information services company, one that still bears their name. They were publishers, not stock traders or brokers. They were first to anticipate the value of timely, independent, accurate, and authoritative financial information. After his father’s death, Henry W. Merged his company with the Standard Statistics Bureau, forming Standard & Poor’s. Acquired by McGraw Hill in 1966, the company remains a leading source of data for individual investors and institutions. Nice early documentation from a Wall Street pioneer, with contextual insight into the intensity of this financial legend. The item “Henry W. Poor. Co-Founder of Standard & Poor’s. Henry Miller 1959 handwritten letter to Pascal Covici, Big Sur, signed ALS, VG++
In Very Good ++ condition, this item was well-stored and carefully preserved. It was folded twice horizonatlly for insertion in a mailing envelope. On top left corner, a slit from removal of staple and a bit of wrinkling around slit. Contains some great literary content between Miller and Pascal Covici, who was himself a literary legend in the publishing world (see below). First, Miller asks about Albert Cossery, whom he expects to meet soon on a trip to Paris. Cossery (3 November 1913 22 June 2008) was an Egyptian-born French writer who was nicknamed “The Voltaire of the Nile”. Then he shares his enthusiasm for Saul Bellow and his book “Henderson the Rain King, ” and asks Covici to give him a hug Hug him for me! The carbon-copy is printed on very delicate yellow carbon paper, which is in Very Good condition. It has a slit and minor wrinkling in upper corner where a staple was removed. Covici asks about “The Henry Miller Reader, ” which was recently published, says he has enclosed a news item about Tropic of Cancer (yet to be published in America, where it was still banned), and adds that the moral climate of America is changing. Some great lietary tie-ins. According to wiki, Pascal Avram “Pat” Covici (18851964) was a Romanian Jewish-American book publisher and editor. Covici and his partner published Gene Fowler, Wyndham Lewis, Clifford Odets, Nathanael West, and John Steinbeck. They published Tortilla Flat in 1935 and other new and reprinted Steinbeck works. In 1938, Covici moved to Viking Press, where he convinced Steinbeck to sign. Viking published The Grapes of Wrath (1939), which received a 1940 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Covici also worked on the Viking Portable Library and with authors like Joseph Campbell, Ludwig Bemelmans, Gilbert Highet, Lionel Trilling, Arthur Miller, George Gamow, Shirley Jackson, Willy Ley, Marianne Moore, and Saul Bellow. Bellow’s novel Herzog, Steinbeck’s East of Eden, and Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle are dedicated to Covici. Henry Miller, handwritten letter, signed, 1958, on the Henry Miller Literary Society letterhead. Composed while Miller was living in Big Sur, as he notes at the top of the letter, which is dated March 9, 1958. The condition is very good; it has been well-preserved. The sheet is a quality onionskin and has been folded twice horizontally. Page has a small barely noticeable 1/4′ tear along edge. Features a nice bold signature in fountain pen. Henry Ward Beecher - 4 page handwritten letter about a scam at his expense
Henry Ward Beecher clergyman, abolitionist, temperance leader, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe. An interesting 4 pages ALS to Rev. Raymond Hoyt Seeley, October 14, 1870. Foreshadowing todays internet scams, Beecher explains a letter from some unidentified man to Seeley conveying a purported conversation or letter from Beecher reporting some dispute with Seeley. It is unclear what the fraud was seeking from Seeley but this wasnt Beechers first run in with the scam. You need not be much chagrinned at being his dupe. We have all served in that capacity. It is perhaps true misery loves company. The letter on all four sides of a folded bifolium page is written in strong dark writing and make for an attractive example with some humorous peak into the problems that followed notoriety in the 19. This item is offered by Custodians of History, Inc. I deal primarily in historic autographs.
