In Very Good + condition, this item was well-stored and carefully preserved. It was folded once horizonally and twice vertically for insertion into a mailing envelope. Nice bold Miller signature in fountain pen at bottom. Contains an interesting reference to reporting on Miller at this early date. The recipient of the letter, Mrs. Clairmonte, had previously forwarded a clipping to Miller from the Pacific Grove paper, which Miller was particularly appreciate of, as he responds: It’s the first time (in America) a newspaper has reported my doings with any accuracy. ” This item is also notable for being written on an unusual stationary, which features a black and white illustration of a drawing on the left; and the words “Big Sur, California on the right. It is also rare to find a Miller letter from this period, in the 1940s. The date is written with a typewriter while the rest of the letter is handwritten in fountain pen. Written on Miller’s personal stationery, with letterhead and printed phrase at bottom: The time of the hyena is upon us. In Colorado; includes original certification from Mueller. Contains some notable literary content: Miller mentions visiting his friend, the author Lawrence Durrell, during a visit to the spiuth of France. Then he adds that he was accompanied by the filmmaker Robert Synder, who was making a film about MIller. It was later released with the Title The Henry Miller Odyssey. In Very Good ++ condition, this item was well-stored and carefully preserved. It was folded twice horizonatlly for insertion in a mailing envelope. On top left corner, a slit from removal of staple and a bit of wrinkling around slit. Contains some great literary content between Miller and Pascal Covici, who was himself a literary legend in the publishing world (see below). First, Miller asks about Albert Cossery, whom he expects to meet soon on a trip to Paris. Cossery (3 November 1913 22 June 2008) was an Egyptian-born French writer who was nicknamed “The Voltaire of the Nile”. The he shares his enthusiasm for Saul Bellow and his book “Henderson the Rain King, ” and asks Covici to give him a hug Hug him for me! The carbon-copy is printed on very delicate yellow carbon paper, which is in Very Good condition. It has a slit and minor wrinkling in upper corner where a staple was removed. Covici asks about “The Henry Miller Reader, ” which was recently published, says he has enclosed a news item about Tropic of Cancer (yet to be published in America, where it was still banned), and adds that the moral climate of America is changing. Some great lietary tie-ins. According to wiki, Pascal Avram “Pat” Covici (18851964) was a Romanian Jewish-American book publisher and editor. Covici and his partner published Gene Fowler, Wyndham Lewis, Clifford Odets, Nathanael West, and John Steinbeck. They published Tortilla Flat in 1935 and other new and reprinted Steinbeck works. In 1938, Covici moved to Viking Press, where he convinced Steinbeck to sign. Viking published The Grapes of Wrath (1939), which received a 1940 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Covici also worked on the Viking Portable Library and with authors like Joseph Campbell, Ludwig Bemelmans, Gilbert Highet, Lionel Trilling, Arthur Miller, George Gamow, Shirley Jackson, Willy Ley, Marianne Moore, and Saul Bellow. Bellow’s novel Herzog, Steinbeck’s East of Eden, and Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle are dedicated to Covici. The letter is addressed to Mr. Shaw, of the Library of Congress, who was helping Miller to track down various books while Miller was composing his “Books in My LIfe, ” a memoir about authors who influenced him, later published by New Directions. In Very Good condition, this item was well-stored and carefully preserved. It was folded once horizonatlly and twice vertically for insertion in a mailing envelope. There is an additional diagonal crease at bottom-left corner. On top left corner, a slit from removal of staple and a bit of wrinkling around slit. Some chipping along right vertical edge, and a couple of small tears along right edge (not discernable in scan). Some browning along edges. Contains some fascinating and humourous literary content between Miller and Pascal Covici, who was himself a literary legend in the publishing world (see below). Here, Miller is attempting to help his friend Alfred Perlès publish a book about the joys of smoking tobacco. Perles was a prominant character in several of Miller’s novels, such as “Quiet Days in Clichy” (in which the character “Carl” is based on Perlès), What Are You Going To Do About Alf? ” and a letter to Perlès in “Aller Retour New York. ” Miller also offers to wtite a preface to the work called “Fear and Anguish. In a “PS, ” Miller adds that he and his wife are rereading “Star of the Unborn, ” which he calls “a great work – a great reach of imagination, ” and suggests to Covici that it would make a good paperback edition project. “Star of the Unborn”. Was a science-fiction novel from 1945 written by. Franz Viktor Werfel (10 September 1890 26 August 1945) an Austrian-Bohemian novelist, playwright, and poet. The carbon-copy is printed on very delicate paper which has some chipping along edges, a couple of small tears on right edge, a one-inch tear at top edge, and a slit and wrinkling in upper corner where a staple was removed. Henry Miller, 1938 handwritten letter, signed, from Villa Seurat, Paris. The letter is in Very Good condition, please see scans. It has been folded to fit into an envelope and is of European stationary size, measuring about 8.25 by 10.75. It has two binder holes (European style) punched along the left margin. Miller’s address, “18 Villa Seurat, Paris (XIV)” is noted at the top. The date appears on the reverse side, 4/4/37. ” The Villa Seurat was where Miller lived in Paris when he composed his groundbreaking novel, “Tropic of Cancer. The letter is addressed to a magazine editor, Mr. Braat, and concerns obtaining copies of a recent article written about Miller by one Mr. Miller also mentions the official working in the U. Censorship office who was sympathetic to Miller’s cause and who has requested copies of anything published about him. Miller also asks that a bill be forwarded to him for two copies of the review. The subject of the review may have been his “Tropic of Cancer, ” which was published in 1934, or a review of his second book, “Black Spring, ” published in 1936.
