Benjamin Harrison clip with handwritten letter from his widow Mary Harrison
Benjamin Harrison clipped signature with an autograph letter signed by his second wife Mary Lord Harrison. Marys letter is on front and back of a folded bifolium sheet of her personal stationery, June 21, 1918 to Whitelaw Saunders in Wamego Kansas. Politely declines the collectors request for a letter from the deceased president. She only has those of a very personal nature and could not part with those but does enclose an autograph. That autograph was clipped from a check and lightly attached at one end to the letter. There is a slight paperclip indentation on the clip which measures approximately 3.5 x. This is an acceptable example of a clip but more valuable staying attached to her letter. Letters sending autographs of family members or colleagues in response to collectors are nice but not uncommon. It is less common to still find examples with the actual signatures. This is a nice piece for collectors interested in the history of autograph collecting or people looking for combinations of presidents and their wives. Mary Lord was the niece of Harrisons first wife who died shortly before Harrisons defeat for re-election to a second term. Although she married the widower years after he left the White House her autographs are included in collections of First Ladies or more accurately, presidents wives. Some time ago another dealer should a different letter from Harrison eight years later to the same collector sending a full letter apparently taking pity on a persistent collector. A copy of that letter is included as reference. [103 East Eighty-Sixth Street]. Your letter of the tenth recd. I enclose, however and hope you can use this in your collection.
