1870 WILLIAM H. PRESCOTT Original SIGNED Handwritten LETTER AUTOGRAPH History
ORIGINAL HAND-WRITTEN SIGNED LETTER. Authentic handwritten, signed letter by William Hickling Prescott , (17961859), American historian, widely recognized by historiographers to have been the first American scientific historian. Prescott’s strengths lay not in philosophical insight and deep analysis but also in the excellent style and presentation of material that made his facts and his narrative alive, colorful, and vivid. Prescott specialized in late Renaissance Spain and the early Spanish Empire (‘The History of Ferdinand and Isabella’,’The History of the Conquest of Mexico’,’The Conquest of Peru’,’Philip II’). During his lifetime, he was upheld as one of the greatest living American intellectuals, and knew personally many of the leading political figures of the day, in both the United States and Britain. Prescott has become one of the most widely translated American historians, and was an important figure in the development of history as a rigorous academic discipline. The letter was written at the Prescott’s residence (‘the Prescott House’) at [55] Beacon Street in Boston, on Dec 8, 1870. In it, he requests that the copies of his works “History of Ferdinand & Isabella, Conquest of Mexico, Conquest of Peru, and Philip the Second – eleven volumes in all ” be sent to Mr. Farrar (natural philosophy & chemistry professor, and the chair of Physics and Astronomy at Elmira College), as well as that the 1st volume of’Ferdinand’ be inscribed to Callisophia Society of Elmira, from the author. On a double/folded piece of paper, measuring approx. The paper shows age toning and light foxing. The rear folded portion shows remnants of glue and paper residue, as it was probably pasted onto an album sheet; it is not affecting the written areas. A rare and important piece of historical and literary ephemera. Hand Written Letter Henry Knox to General Jackson Revolutionary War of Comedian
The letter is written to Knox’s good friend General Henry Jackson of Boston and is dated ” Philadelphia 27 May, 1795″. The content of the letter is wonderful as it is a letter to be carried by hand by a “Mr Chalmers” who Knox states is without a doubt among the finest if not the finest comedian who ever has made his appearance in our country and in other respects a gentleman. There are some splits along the edges and a few pieces of tape on the back as can be seen in the photos. Still a very unusual and desirable letter.
